Stephen Plog jointly formed Family Law Advocates, P.A. in 2021. Mr. Plog has been an attorney since 1998 and has exclusively practiced family law since 2001. He is licensed in both Florida and Colorado. Mr. Plog (Steve) enjoys zealously advocating for his clients as strives to obtain the fair outcomes they deserve in their divorce and child custody cases.

With over two decades of family law litigation experience, he has vast amounts of knowledge and insight to share on all matters related to domestic relations cases. Some of Steve’s legal experience includes successfully arguing in front of the Colorado Supreme Court and Court of Appeals regarding litigation that changed decades-old case law concerning Colorado common-law marriage. While Steve greatly enjoys both complex legal writing and litigating trials in the courtroom, his current role with the Family Law Advocates is largely managerial, focusing on client satisfaction, quality control, and other business aspects of the firm. In addition to his managerial duties, he’s available to provide legal support to the attorneys on our dedicated family law team.

With any client interactions he may have, Steve looks forward to helping people understand their rights and options related to their assets and children. He understands each case, and each client, is unique.

Attorney Plog’s childhood entailed multiple moves around the country. With a university professor for a father, he lived in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, ultimately Las Cruces, New Mexico. Steve obtained his undergraduate degree, in psychology, from New Mexico State University. While working towards his Bachelor’s Degree, he also engaged in pre-law studies. Though law school was his ultimate goal, Steve started working towards a Master’s Degree in public administration. Rather than completing his graduate degree, he decided it was time to start law school. Steve studied law at Quinnipiac University School of Law in Hamden, Connecticut, graduating in 1997.

Mr. Plog’s legal career started in Denver, Colorado, as a general practitioner. He soon discovered that he had both an acumen and love for family law cases. Representing divorce and child custody clients allowed Steve to help people in a truly meaningful and last manner. In 1999, he formed the Denver based firm, Plog & Stein, P.C., with his Family Law Advocates partner, Laura B. Stein. Since 2001, Plog & Stein has been dedicated exclusively to family law. Over the years, Steve has worked hard to ensure that his firm provides quality legal representation with each divorce or family law case it handles. Today, that firm has helped thousands of people consider their options related to their domestic relations matters.

Seeking to broaden their business and legal base, the Plog & Stein partners made the decision was to open a new, separate firm in Florida. With the Tampa Bay area being similar in size to Denver, it just made sense as the right location to start the Family Law Advocates and to help family law clients in the Tampa area, as Steve has done for so many years in Denver.

Professionally, Steve works hard to help people with their family issues. In his private life, nothing matters more to him than his wife and children. Aside from working hard to be a true “family law nerd,” Steve’s passions include travel, golf, and trying to master various languages. Steve is partially fluent in Spanish and is working on obtaining a good grasp of both Italian and French. When time permits, he volunteers to help with charitable endeavors, such as beach clean-ups and the care of unwanted animals. Beyond legal facts, Steve’s eidetic memory allows him to retain vast amounts of random knowledge, which he uses to excel at Jeopardy (from his couch). He also uses that memory to help his clients.
